COLLIDER

San Bernardino, California

Tucked into the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, this seasonal cabin was designed in response to wind, light, and landscape.

Two simple gabled volumes intersect, forming a sheltered refuge that extends south toward the valley. Clad in dark corrugated metal, the forms are durable and understated, while a carved-out cedar deck provides a warm contrast, capturing sunlight and reflecting it deep into the interiors. Linear planters along the perimeter collect rainwater from the roof, drawing in seasonal pollinators, and with them, the shifting scent of florals in the breeze.

Over time, the materials will weather, settling into the rhythms of the terrain. Prefabricated framing and off-the-shelf materials provide an efficient construction model adaptable for future retreats—individual or communal, temporary or lasting.
